How do domains work?

Your web browser looks up the website’s address in the domain name system (DNS) when you type the domain name or URL you want to visit.

The request proceeds to the next DNS server until the domain name is found if it cannot be located in the first one. When the DNS server locates the request, it provides your web browser with the IP address associated with the website. The hosting server sends information about the website to the browser, which transforms and displays it as the desired webpage.

Just like memorizing phone numbers for every contact, it would be impracticable to remember IP addresses for websites.

With DNS resolution taking place in milliseconds, which is frequently invisible to the user, users simply need to memorize the domain name.
